I think the issue is that we're too caring as a nation. There is a point where being so empathetic and caring does actually blind you to the truth/reality.
That and the aversion to being blunt with each other
The fact it took so long to find a journalist to write this story is simply shocking. Every journalist who was approached and declined should hang their head in shame.
Disgusting that this happened. It’s time to ditch the TQ training in all social services and media. Time for reality, common sense, evidence AND accountability. I hope a full scale inquiry from the highest levels takes place after this tragic loss of life. RIP sweet girl.
I heard the RNZ headline on morning report 'Trans teenager starves to death in motel' and was enraged. In the name of public accountability, we need to name the school. Many of my teaching colleagues are starting to fight back against this, having been previously silenced by the cancel culture. We have to name and shame the schools to prevent the admin hiding behind the wall of silence. What happens in these circumstances is that staff are instructed not to speak about it and refer anything to the Principal under threat of severe punishment and possible job loss.
It is the mob that carries the common sense here - the experts have built up an oligarchy for themselves where they hand down bullshit as truth due to ideological capture. We need to take back control of policy back into majoritarian hands from the professional-managerial class.
I couldn’t agree more with your second statement. As for the first sentence - I think it is all in the definition of “mob” and whether you agree that those who position themselves as “experts” (often with the help of media and bad actors) are indeed qualified and/or proven to be experts.
Ok, who is the "mob" and who is the "elite" in this? Who is right and who is wrong?
My husband worked for 41 years for a major international airline. He started as an apprentice, worked in the hangars, then worked his way up to a senior engineering position, just one rung below senior management. He spent the last 15 years of his career analysing what caused things to go wrong with aeroplanes. He was one of a handful of people who were on the end of a phone 24/7/365 for when an aircraft had a problem in his specific aspect of the aircraft, whether it was at Heathrow or Timbuktu. He had the power to say "that aircraft stays on the ground till we know what's wrong with it." He had the power to ground the entire fleet.
When one of his aircraft crash landed short of the runway on 17 January 2008 his team had worked out the basic problem, if not the underlying cause, within 10 minutes. The official report came out on 10 December 2014. Seven years later. He is also a qualified pilot and has flown everything from a single engine Cessna to a 757. Boeing used to ask for his input when they were designing new aircraft. He's testified a number of times in court cases about why an aircraft did what it did. One aircraft kept blowing tyres, but it took him to finally work out that when that particular aircraft was built, someone had switched two wires further up in the landing gear. I'd call him an "expert", but then so were the people he worked with.
But put him on a social media thread about the Concorde crash and he'll be told he's a liar. The fact that he actually had a small part to play in the investigation, and physically worked on the aircraft in the hangars, and even flew on the things to diagnose a problem that only occurred during flight, but not on the ground, doesn't mean he's qualified to have an opinion according to the "mob". The fact that he could watch the video of the Air India 787 going down and point out things that were unusual, just makes him a nasty man who should STFU and leave it for 5 years of 7 years or 10 years before the official report comes out.
Don't use your expertise, or experience, or intelligence to make an informed comment. Just shut up and behave like a mushroom, because you don't have a current badge that says "AAIB Lead Investigator". You're not allowed to be an expert because the uneducated mob has decided that you need to just "be kind". It's ridiculous, and why our society is falling apart.
Arguably a case of state funded manslaughter. And all under the watch of the “Be Kind” crowd. Sadly it wouldn’t even surprise me if the main expert involved - the psychiatrist - got sanctioned by their professional body and/or lampooned and maligned by the same crowd while the tragedy was unfolding.
I am enraged by this story as I was when reading about another child beaten to death recently. Why is it that the more NZ, sorry, Aotearoa embraces progressive ideology, the malignancy of the effects seem to grow in scope?
“Distracted” by her gender identity doesn’t quite capture it.
“Forbidden” is closer.
Intervening with a severe anorexic requires being able to tell them to their face that they are not what they think they are.
“You are not overweight. You’re actually very dangerously thin.”
But you’re not allowed to tell a member of the sacred caste of trans that they are not what they say they are, because you’ve been trained, upon pain of being condemned as a bigot, to go along with whatever they say they are.
This should be a Royal Commission of Inquiry and a reform of the system. I fear it will not be.
Unless we descend into a semi authoritarian state, including so-called hate speech laws (possible), we will get an Inquiry eventually.
Thank you Ani. Everyone should be shocked and outraged that a teenager could die all alone in our supposedly caring country.

Thank god for Ruth Hill!
This is truly a devastating story and a searing indictment on all the authorities who allowed it to unfold. Special thanks to Fern Hickson

We are no longer a civilised society.
When the way forward is dictated by the mob not the expert you see anarchy ahead and civilisation disappearing in the rear view mirror.
But it is precisely the opposite!

# This is not longer a civilised country.
# I will not shut up.
OMG! it's beyond my comprehension that this could happen in our "caring country"!*!
When I first started reading the article I thought it was some other country, totally gobsmaked that this happened in NZ!
Thanks for posting this. This shit is out of control. The state is out of control.

Well done for writing this…and tragic that you had to…T
There are no words for the overwhelming sadness I felt reading this. What a waste of a young life.
Heartbreaking
Heartbreaking.

Every single organisation failed this girl.
