Maori should celebrate Waitangi Day and the colonialism of New Zealand.

As David Farrar points out today in Kiwiblog that on February 6th 1840 slavery became illegal.

This was to the detriment of tribal leaders as it was estimated by the missionary, William Yates that about half the Maori population in northern New Zealand were slaves.

In the South Island the figure was close to 10% of the Maori population.

Not only was Maori slavery abolished but so too the inter tribal warfare whereby extensive areas of New Zealand were stolen and plundered by conquering tribes.

The Musket Wars alone accounted for the loss of circa 40,000 Maori lives thus if colonialism had not occurred it is possible the Maori race would have become extinct.

By signing the treaty and ceding sovereignty the Maori population gained not only the same rights as British citizens but also the protection of the Crown from slavery, cannibalism and the ongoing theft of tribal land by neighboring tribes.

All Maori should be celebrating and be eternally grateful for the colonization of New Zealand.

You are one of the most well balanced unofficial columnist in New Zealand. You have made complex dynamics clear and easy to dissect. I think you are also spot on with Peeni Henare coming over to NZ First.
