Thanks Ani. It's a pretty sorry state of affairs when the top brass in the NZ Police are that corrupt. And useless. Watch now how all the Politicians are screaming this from the rooftops, yet the entire reign of Cuddles Coster smells of the brown and is a direct result of Labour's DEI promotion BS. Let us not forget that Jevon McSkimming was appointed as a statutory Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Zealand) on the recommendation of the then-Prime Minister, Chris Hipkins, in April 2023. Yet do we see chippy saying 'oops, that was a fucking bad call'?? No, we do not.

I read through a lot of the IPCA report today and my jaw was on the floor at how much they tried to bury these allegations. A total lack of morals and integrity on the part of just about everyone involved.

I felt sick and shocked in equal measures reading through it. Utterly without integrity. I’m still quite gobsmacked.

The cavalier way they talked about it was just atrocious. Rushing an investigation in a week? FFS.

Thanks Ani. Fulsome detail !

Depressing Disheartening though

I feel for that young woman and how callously she has been treated

And I know this is bringing politics into it but basically National have been recycling Labours trash

Coster / McSkimming and others have been outed thank goodness, but National reemployed Coster in some other high paid role ! (that he’s now on leave from)

But it makes you think doesn’t it ….

About …The police treatment of protesters at Parliament….

The Albert Park debacle

What a utterly rotten mess

Yes, it should make everyone reassess their respect for our police. Not all, of course, are corrupt, but the rot sets in from the top as ambition takes hold of them and squeezes out any residual integrity!

Thanks for your detailed reporting of this..all NZers have a duty to read and understand that this can and does happen. How easy it is to use workplace power dynamics to silence the victims of assault.

Many heads should roll and despite what Mark Mitchell says - this should also be considered a political issue. Successive high ranking Political figures have their sticky fingers all over this … let’s also consider Benjamin “Bussy” Doyle who I understand had links to Jevon…

Can we dig deep enough in this? I doubt it - but we should!

Thanks again

They have been doing this for decades.

I read the report too quickly.

I said something on X earlier that wasn't correct.

I thought Kuru was one of the good ones. She was the head honcho for a period in Hawkes Bay. (This explains a lot to be now)

But, no, a top female cop was dismissing a victim, also.

I have waited years for this bully boy bs to finally come to light.

Victims should always be heard and their claims (whether false or true) need to be thoroughly investigated.

This is despicable behaviour by those we are told to call in our worst moments.

NZ has a very dark, dirty culture of abuse.

Victims are still blamed and they still suffer the consequences for years.

I too was disgusted with Deputy Commissioner Kura. Good thing she 'retired'!

Z sounds like an absolute hero. Refused to back down on the sexual assault allegations when threatened with prosecution.

Thanks Ani, a horrifying saga indeed. If, as reported, the woman is still being prosecuted for her emails that beggars belief.

I sincerely hope the woman concerned absolutely slams them with action in the courts, to be convicted and now we find she was telling the truth all along!

As a NZ Police employee, I find this situation abhorrent. However I would not say that the entire culture of the organisation is rotten. It’s a large and complex organisation that is a microcosm of society, so there will be plenty of exceptional, hard working and loyal public servants. And unfortunately there will be people like these scrotums…

what strikes me the most, is although the good eggs were there, they ultimately tried but were silenced because this was at thee very top. Absolutely shambolic, the whole top echelon needs to be replaced..... get rid of them all. There can be no trust in Kura, Coster, or ANY of the deputies.

James. While don't doubt what you state is true, would perceive that the way MANY cops acted through covid when the power went to their heads, and now THIS pigsh¡t - zero respect and trust for any and all from thousands if not 100s of thousands of Kiwi's

The descriptive you used James, "public SERVANTS"... oh no no, cops think they're a cut better, everyone else are just the serfs

Will take a generation for the police to recover and restore the social contract but I perceive they never will, as they think they're untouchable. Which in a lot of ways they are, as who's an absolute authority over them?

Great read, thanks Ani. It's sickening such misogyny exists in the very organisation that is supposed to protect women from male violence. No wonder women don't report sexual violence to the Police. All NZ women should be enraged by this - at the very least women are 50% of our population and as taxpayers deserve a better service!!

A great read, fantastic how u set this out.

1/ How do we prevent this sort of thing from happening again - short answer we can't

2/ Why - WHY even after everyone was aware of this, was this again covered up and hushed up. There can be no excuses for this and imo the whole lot of the upper echelon of Police need to be fired for misconduct unbecoming that were involved. To actually override the 105 teams, to hush up the investigations, all of them need to be removed. Arghhhh it makes me sick!

Well sourced and well presented - again love your work Ani

Yes, Ani, I had just finished reading all 135 pages of the full report when I read your piece. The report was rivetting reading, and also sickening how almost all the police protected McSkimming so that he could become Commissioner of Police, except for the FTAC officer and Officer M - she's the hero of the saga! No wonder the Govt ministers looked so abashed in front of the the TV cameras! What a scandal!!!

This sort of toxic culture has infested the government service for years. Many police staff leave for other jobs in the public service and take this sort of culture with them. The worst example would have to be the Civil Aviation Authority. Including the previous Director (now an "Advisor") many of the management structure are ex police officers, quite possibly appointed by cronyism, who have a history of alleged bullying and harassment. In most of these cases the perpetrators have been made into the victim, sound familiar?
